A moated castle with a long noble tradition

Wocklum Castle in Balve is one of the standout residences in Sauerland. It lies in the Orlebach valley, and its history reaches back to a medieval fortified settlement and the early fief ownership of the local nobility. In the fourteenth century, the von Wockelheim family lived here, and later the estate passed into the hands of other Westphalian aristocratic families.

An important stage was the period of Hermann von Hatzfeld, a former bailiff who emerged as an opponent of the Reformation during the Truchsess War. Since 1656, the castle has been connected with the Counts of Landsberg-Velen, who have owned it to this day. The family also secured its property position by founding a family entail in 1681, a legal institution that protected family estates from being divided.

A noble seat and a living regional center

Wocklum is more than just a reminder of aristocratic living. In the modern era, it became part of the wider economic base of the estate, and its owners also influenced the industrial development of the surrounding area. Among the best-known members of the family was Ignaz von Landsberg-Velen und Gemen, who had Luisenhütte rebuilt, an important monument to early ironworking in the region.

Today, the castle is also known for the Balve Optimum equestrian tournament, held regularly since 1948, and for the Landpartie social event. Wocklum thus brings together noble history, economic history, and present-day cultural use.
