The Venetian Fortress in Butrint
The Venetian Fortress of Butrint stands at the highest point of the peninsula in what is now Butrint National Park in southern Albania. Its position above the Vivari Channel was no accident, since it controlled access to an important waterway as well as the fish traps that had been a vital source of livelihood for centuries.
After 1386, the Venetians acquired the surrounding territory from the Angevin Kingdom of Naples, and shortly afterward they built a fortification here that matched their commercial and military interests in the Adriatic region. The fortress was part of a broader network of Venetian strongholds that protected coastal routes and the local economy.
Changes in Time of War
In 1572, the acropolis fortress was abandoned during the conflicts between the Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire. Its defensive role then shifted to the new Venetian triangular castle, built across the channel as a more practical replacement. The later history of the site reflects the changing powers in the region, from French rule to the government of Ali Pasha of Tepelena and the later Ottoman period.
In the twentieth century, restoration was carried out under the direction of Luigi Maria Ugolini, and from 1936 the Butrint Archaeological Museum was housed here. Today, visitors can see not only military architecture, but also a long history of administration, trade, and the protection of a strategic coastal area.
