A remembrance of a political murder that shook Spain
The Miguel Angel Blanco Memorial commemorates the councillor of the town of Ermua, a member of the Popular Party, who was kidnapped and murdered by the terrorist organization ETA in July 1997. His case became one of the most decisive moments in modern Spanish history, because it sparked an exceptionally strong civic response across the country.
Blanco was a young economist who had only entered municipal politics in the mid-1990s. His kidnapping was meant to pressure the government into moving ETA prisoners to the Basque Country. Instead of the expected political concession, however, a mass mobilization of the public followed. Demonstrations in Bilbao, Madrid, Barcelona, and other cities showed that part of society was already rejecting violence without qualification.
Historical significance
Blanco's death became a symbol of the so-called spirit of Ermua, that is, civic resistance to terrorism and political blackmail. A foundation bearing his name was also established to commemorate the victims of violence and preserve the memory of this event. For visitors, this place is above all a reminder of how deeply the conflict between ETA and the Spanish state affected everyday life in the Basque Country.
The memorial is not only a personal tribute to one politician. It also reflects the atmosphere of the late twentieth century in Spain, when the issue of security, autonomy, and violent separatism became part of public life and family stories alike. It was here that political demands, media coverage, and civic solidarity collided in a way that changed the future course of the entire country.
