Svartifoss in Skaftafell
Svartifoss is one of the best-known waterfalls in Iceland and a striking geological site in Vatnajokull National Park. It is located in Skaftafell, in a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and long-term weathering. The name means “black waterfall” and refers to the dark basalt columns that surround it.
The waterfall drops into a natural rock amphitheater, whose walls are made mainly of hexagonal columns formed as lava cooled. Regular cracking and shrinkage of the rock created a network of vertical edges and horizontal grooves that are typical of this site. The base of the waterfall is strewn with sharp stones, recalling the constant movement of water and rock material.
Significance for Icelandic architecture
The basalt columns at Svartifoss also inspired Icelandic architects. The most famous example of this motif can be seen in the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik, but echoes of the same formal language can be found in other modern buildings as well. Here, natural geology was translated into national architecture in a very direct and legible way.
For visitors, Svartifoss is valuable not only as a photogenic destination, but also as an example of how Iceland’s glacial and volcanic landscape creates exceptionally clear geological formations. It is this combination of natural process, distinctive morphology, and cultural inspiration that gives the place its extraordinary significance.
