Stráž nad Nežárkou
The chateau stands on the eastern edge of the town on a rocky spur above the Nežárka River. It is one of those monuments where the long development from a medieval castle to a later noble residence can still be clearly read. Today it is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
From a Gothic castle to a Renaissance residence
The castle was founded in the second half of the thirteenth century by the Lords of Stráž, a branch of the Vítkovci family. The first written record dates from 1284. The original layout had two parts, with a central castle core and an outer bailey. From the Gothic period, the most important surviving features are the tower with its wedge-shaped spur and part of the fortifications, while later rebuilding changed the appearance of the residential buildings and service areas.
After a fire in 1570, a Renaissance restoration followed. At that time, the function of many Czech castles was changing, as they were no longer primarily defensive strongholds but more comfortable residential seats. Stráž passed into the hands of important noble families, including the Rožmberks, the Lords of Hradec, and the Slavatas.
Baroque alterations and later history
After 1715, the estate was rebuilt in the Baroque style under the Černíns. Further construction work reflected the transformation of the residence in the modern era, when its original castle character was gradually fading away. In the first half of the twentieth century, the chateau was acquired by the opera singer Ema Destinn, who is among the best-known figures associated with this place.
The present appearance of the complex reflects several building phases as well as the changing nature of noble living in South Bohemia. What makes Stráž nad Nežárkou so interesting for visitors is that in one place it shows its medieval origins, Renaissance alterations, and Baroque interventions in the older castle.
