Scale and setting

Spis Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in Slovakia. It stretches across a travertine hill rising high above the surrounding landscape and naturally commanding the main route between Spis and Saris. Thanks to its position, the castle served for centuries not only as a seat of power but also as a key point for controlling trade routes.

Architectural development

The complex took shape gradually from the twelfth century onward, and its form continued to change until the eighteenth century. Today, visitors can see above all the remains of the upper, middle, and lower castle, a Romanesque palace, a defensive tower, a Gothic chapel, and a Renaissance arcaded corridor. Each of these parts recalls a different stage in the development of the fortified residence, from an early medieval stronghold to an aristocratic residential seat.

History and significance

The castle was associated with the kings of Hungary, the ispans of Spis, and prominent noble families, especially the Zapolyais, the Thurzos, and the Csakys. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, it underwent major rebuilding that reflected changes in military technology as well as growing demands for representation. After a fire in 1780, it became a ruin, yet it is precisely this condition that today allows its architectural history to be read with exceptional clarity.

Since 1993, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and ranks among the most important monuments of the Spis region.
