A medieval fortress above the canyon

Sokograd is among the most important medieval fortresses in the Pliva River valley in present day Bosnia and Herzegovina. It stood on a steep slope above the Sokočnica River and guarded the important area of the Pliva county, which was the administrative and military center of the region in the Middle Ages.

The core of the castle was probably founded already at the end of the first half of the thirteenth century. It gradually expanded from a fortified tower into an upper and lower town, that is, into a more complex castle complex with walls, towers, and facilities for the garrison and the inhabitants. In a later phase, the fortifications were also adapted to defend against firearms.

Defense, wars, and changes of rule

In 1363, the fortress became the target of an attack by King Louis I of Hungary. The defense led by Prince Vukac Hrvatinić repelled the assault, and Sokograd became a symbol of local military strength. For this service, Vukac received the castle and the whole Pliva county and was raised to the rank of duke.

Another attempt to capture it followed in 1405. After the fall of the Bosnian Kingdom, the fortress found itself in the zone of conflict between the Hungarians and the Ottomans. In the end, the Ottomans took control of it at the beginning of the sixteenth century and held it until 1833. After that, it lost its military significance.

Today, the individual building layers and the changes in defensive architecture can still be seen at Sokograd. The site is valuable not only as a ruin, but also as a witness to the long struggle for control over the strategic Pliva valley.
