Skansbron in Stockholm

Skansbron is a lift bridge over Hammarby Lock that connects Södermalm with Sodra Hammarbyhamnen, now Hammarby Sjostad, as well as with Arsta. It was put into operation in 1925 as part of a major overhaul of the transport network in southern Stockholm.

A bridge in a time of great change

Skansbron was created in connection with the Hammarbyleden project, which was meant to divert shipping from overburdened routes and link waterways with new road and rail connections. It was a period when Stockholm was growing rapidly and the city needed modern infrastructure for industry, port operations, and everyday commuting.

The bridge was designed as a double steel lift bridge by the port authority's engineers. Its technical solution matched an era when it was necessary to reconcile navigation with land transport. The lifting mechanism allowed vessels with an air draught of 12.5 meters to pass, but it also meant frequent interruptions to road traffic.

Part of a broader transport system

Skansbron was not an isolated structure. It belonged to a larger network of bridges, canals, and locks, including Danviksbron, Liljeholmsbron, Arstabron, and Danvikskanalen. This system fundamentally changed how southern Stockholm functioned and eased pressure on older routes, especially Nils Ericson's Lock.

The area around the bridge also saw gradual changes in urban transport. In the past, it carried heavy tram traffic; later, this was replaced by the metro and other road connections. Today, Skansbron recalls the transition from a harbor and tram city to a modern metropolis built on road and rail transport.

Its significance is therefore not only technical, but also urban. In one place, it tells the story of Stockholm's expansion, the transformation of waterways, and the effort to harmonize different modes of transport in Sweden's rapidly developing capital.
