History and significance of the institution
The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Chișinău ranks among the oldest museum institutions in Moldova. It was established in October 1889 on the basis of a collection of exhibits from the first agricultural exhibition in Bessarabia, supported by Baron A. Stuart. The museum’s very origins show how closely agriculture, natural science, and the effort to document the local environment were linked in the society of the time.
Over time, not only the institution’s name changed, but also its professional focus. From an agricultural museum through a museum of zoology and agriculture to its present form, it evolved in step with political changes and the development of scientific knowledge. Since 1991, it has borne its current name and has focused on ethnography, natural history, and the regional identity of Moldova.
The building and its surroundings
The museum building itself is an architectural monument of national significance. It is entered in the Register of Monuments of the History and Culture of the city of Chișinău and stands as a valuable testimony to the city’s historic urban fabric. Behind the museum lies a landscaped garden, listed as a monument of landscape architecture, which complements the overall character of the complex.
A visit to the museum is therefore not only an encounter with exhibits, but also with a historic setting that reflects the city’s cultural ambitions at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Today, the institution is an important point of reference for understanding the history of Bessarabia, traditional ways of life, and the natural wealth of the region.
