An industrial site with a wartime past

Mitteldeutsche Motorenwerke GmbH, also known as MMW or MiMo, was one of the major enterprises of the Auto Union conglomerate. The plant was founded in Leipzig in 1935 and from 1939 operated in Taucha, in a forested area northwest of the city that also extended partly toward Leipzig-Portitz. It was not an ordinary factory, but part of the German armaments and aircraft industry, which in the 1930s and 1940s was closely tied to the state war economy.

The company produced Junkers aircraft engines under license, especially the Jumo 205, Jumo 211 and Jumo 213 models, as well as components for the Jumo 004 turbojet engine. At the height of its expansion, around 10,000 people worked here, including forced laborers. This shows not only the technical level of production, but also the dark side of the industry of the time, which relied heavily on coerced labor.

What remained after the war

After the end of the Second World War, the plant was partly dismantled in 1947 as an armaments enterprise, and the remains were blown up. The company was removed from the commercial register on August 27, 1948. Today, the site matters above all as a reminder of how quickly a modern industrial complex can become part of wartime infrastructure and just as quickly disappear from the map. For visitors, it is primarily a location associated with the history of aviation, Auto Union, and the postwar end of one of the region’s major factories.
