History and appearance of the site

Michalov Castle is among the oldest fortified settlements in the area of present-day Michalovce. It was founded in the second half of the 13th century as a water castle, a residence protected not only by walls and towers, but also by a body of water that made access difficult for attackers. Such buildings were typical in the Middle Ages for lowland and waterlogged areas, where it was possible to use both natural terrain and artificially created moats.

The castle appears in sources under the Latin names castrum Nagymihalwara, castrum Nagymihal and castrum Hagymihal. These mentions show that it was an important administrative and power center of the Zemplín County. Later, the complex was rebuilt into a manor house, reflecting the change in noble residence from a purely defensive function to a more comfortable and representative seat.

Importance in the region

Michalovce lay in an area where the interests of the local nobility, royal power and the broader history of Hungary met. Similar residences were not only defensive strongholds, but also controlled estates, the collection of dues and the administration of the surrounding territory. Today they recall the early medieval form of the town and its links to the network of castles in the area, among them Brekov, Čičava, Jasenov, Pozdišov Castle and Viniansky Castle.

From the original castle, above all the historical memory of the place has survived. That memory is important for understanding the development of Michalovce from a medieval fortified center to a later noble residence and urban setting.
