Metallurgy as the Region's Industrial Heritage

The Metallurgical Museum in the Felsőhámor district of Miskolc presents the history of domestic ironworking and metalworking, with special emphasis on local tradition in Diósgyőr and Massa. It is among the institutions that focus not only on technical development, but also on the everyday operation of smelters, the work of specialists, and the changing industrial landscape of northern Hungary.

The museum manages an extensive collection of objects, models, dioramas, photographs, and specialized literature. Visitors gain an overview of pig iron production, the development of blast furnaces, steelmaking methods, and blacksmithing. The exhibition also shows rolling, the production of wire and screws, and the development of railway rails used in Hungary since the mid-19th century.

The Historic Building

The museum building itself was constructed between 1778 and 1779 in the Baroque style, according to plans by the engineer Johann Nepomuk Frieser. It originally served as an office, residence, and storage facility for the metallurgical operation. In the mid-19th century it was expanded by another floor, and in the 20th century it underwent further alterations that changed its original facade. Since 1985, it has been a protected monument.

Next to the building stands the memorial column of Fridrich Fazola, and metal features on the facade and at the entrance recall the metallurgical craft and the German immigrant specialists who made a major contribution to the development of local industry.

Part of a Larger Complex

The museum is also connected with outdoor sites, including Oskohó, a water hammer from 1979, and a technical open-air museum established in 1982. It is here that the traditional tap of the furnace is demonstrated on special occasions. Since 1994, the museum has been part of the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport.
