A fortification hub on the edge of the old town

Marie Bastion was one of the most important parts of the Fortress of Luxembourg. It was built on the site of an older medieval tower fortification and was gradually rebuilt according to the principles of modern bastioned fortification. Its role was clear: to protect the northwestern front of the fortress, control the access routes, and cover the New Gate.

The core of the entire system was the bastion itself with a cavalier, that is, an elevated platform for artillery, and outworks such as the contregarde and the redoubt later called Fort Marie. This made it a multilayered defensive complex that reflected the development of warfare in the 16th and 17th centuries.

What you will find here today

The original structures were removed after 1867 during the dismantling of the Fortress of Luxembourg. Today’s street layout, however, still follows the former fortification area. Boulevard Royal, Avenue Amelie, and the surrounding streets clearly show how extensive this fortification once was. The site is therefore important not only for military history, but also for understanding the city’s transformation from a fortress into a modern metropolis.
