A private zoo with an emphasis on animal care

Leintalzoo in Schwaigern is a smaller privately run zoo that differs from ordinary zoos chiefly in its focus. It is not just about displaying animals to the public, but also about taking in neglected individuals and caring for them over the long term. The grounds are home to roughly 250 animals representing about 40 species, with special attention given to primates. Visitors can see several species of monkeys and one of the largest groups of chimpanzees in Germany.

The origins and development of the grounds

The zoo's roots go back to 1974, when a support association for a great ape enclosure was founded in Ludwigsburg. A few years later, the project moved to Schwaigern, where the private Leintalzoo opened in 1980. A key role was played by Peter Geßmann, who in the 1970s rescued orphaned great ape infants in Africa and brought them to Germany. More animals were gradually added, handed over by animal welfare organizations or private individuals.

A natural setting between Leingarten and Schwaigern

The zoo lies in a marshy area with ponds, wet habitats, and stands of trees. This setting is important not only for the appearance of the grounds, but also for its ecological function. Storks, herons, water turtles, and a range of small creatures thrive here, including dragonflies, amphibians, and hedgehogs. The site also includes an educational trail, a beehive, a playground, and a space for farm animals. Leintalzoo thus combines a zoological display with a landscaped park and nature education.

In recent years, however, it has become clear that some of the species kept here have gradually disappeared as the individual animals have grown old. This also highlights the changing nature of such facilities, which depend on the breeding of specific individuals, veterinary care, and long-term planning. That is precisely where the question arises of how the zoo will balance animal protection, its educational role, and the further development of the grounds in the future.
