The Highest Peak of the Bukovske Vrchy
Kremenec reaches an elevation of 1,221 m and lies on the border of Slovakia, Poland, and Ukraine. It is the highest point of the Bukovske Vrchy, the easternmost point of Slovakia, and an important landmark in the Poloniny region. Today, the summit itself forms part of the border ridge linking several protected areas of three countries.
Landscape, Borders, and Nature Protection
The summit area takes the form of a small mountain meadow surrounded by forest, so it offers only limited views. Its importance lies above all in its location. On the Slovak side, it belongs to Poloniny National Park and the Stuzica National Nature Reserve, on the Polish side to Bieszczady National Park, and on the Ukrainian side to Uzhansky National Park. This is a territory with exceptionally well-preserved beech primeval forests that form part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
Tri-border and Hiking
On the southwestern slope stands a granite border pillar from 2000, marking the tri-border of Slovakia, Poland, and Ukraine. The place is accessible via marked hiking trails, including the East Carpathian Trail. The ascent from Nova Sedlica is among the most common routes and leads through a landscape where state borders and various administrative units have long intersected. Kremenec is thus not only a summit in the geographical sense, but also a point with a distinct historical and natural continuity.
