Holzgauer Wetterspitze

Holzgauer Wetterspitze, sometimes also referred to as Lechtaler Wetterspitze, is among the most striking peaks of the Lechtal Alps. At 2,895 m, it is the sixth highest summit in the entire range and at the same time an eye-catching rock tower that drops steeply into the surrounding landscape. It lies to the east above Frederick-Simms-Hutte at the head of the Sulzeltal valley, in a landscape where the mountain terrain quickly gives way to sheer walls and sharp ridges.

Geologically, the mountain is made of hard Upper Rhaetian limestone, a rock formed at the end of the Triassic. It is this resistant stone that gave the summit its solid, sharply sculpted shape. Nearby are other important points along the ridge, such as Etlerkopf, Fallenbacherspitze, and Feuerspitze, which create the typical high-mountain backdrop of this part of Tyrol.

Ascent and character of the place

The easiest approach leads from Frederick-Simms-Hutte across Fallenbacherjoch pass along the southern ridge. The final section requires easy climbing and sure footing, as the terrain is exposed and in places secured with a steel cable. From Kaisers, it is possible to ascend by a longer route through Kaisertal. Holzgauer Wetterspitze is therefore not only a viewpoint, but also a mountain that demands respect for alpine conditions and experience on high terrain.

In good visibility, the summit opens up an exceptionally broad panorama across many Alpine groups, from the Zillertal Alps and Stubai Alps to the Ortler, the Valais Alps, the Glarus Alps, and the Uri Alps, as well as the distant Black Forest. It is precisely this range of views that reveals the summit's strategic position in the Northern Limestone Alps. The question remains how the significance of this mountain changed for local inhabitants and the first mountaineers who began to venture into these parts.
