Location and access
The ruins of Grüneck Castle lie above the village of Ilanz in the Surselva region of the canton of Graubunden, at an altitude of about 720 m. They stand east of Strada, right by the road to Ruschein. From the bus stop it is only a few minutes' walk through the undergrowth, making it an easy destination even for a short stop on a journey through the Rhine Valley.
The appearance of the ruins
What survives above all is the massive remnant of the residential tower with a pentagonal ground plan. The masonry is made of large ashlar blocks and in places reaches a thickness of 2.8 to 3 meters. Particularly striking is the precise dressing of the corner stones and a section of plaster with red scorching, known as Rasa Pietra. The masonry also shows openings for a balcony, arrow slits and a garderobe bay, indicating a relatively thoughtful arrangement for both living and defense.
Historical significance
The castle and its original owners are not documented in charters, but the form of the building points to an origin around 1200. The first indirect mention dates from 1515, when the property "near Ilanz Gryenegg" is recorded in the interest book of St. Nicholas Monastery in Chur. By the early modern period, the castle was probably already abandoned, and the name Gruneck was later adopted by the Schmid family, which subsequently gained noble status and an important position in the service of the Three Leagues.
Today, the ruin is valuable precisely because, in a small area, it shows the form of a modest medieval castle fortress in an Alpine setting. At the same time, it recalls the transformation of the local elite, which moved from a castle residence into administrative and military roles in the wider region. Exactly what the original complex looked like and who founded it, however, remains unclear.
