A Renaissance residence with a long administrative tradition

Greillenstein Castle in Röhrenbach, Lower Austria, is one of the most interesting noble residences in the Waldviertel. Its present form arose on the site of an older fortified manor, documented as early as the fourteenth century. Since 1534, the castle's history has been closely tied to the Kuefstein family, who built here both a representative residence and the administrative center of their extensive estate.

The building was completed around 1604 as a four wing complex around an enclosed courtyard. The castle served not only as a home, but also as an official seat for several large estates. This dual role explains both its carefully planned layout and the excellent preservation of its interiors.

What to notice during your visit

The south gate with its tower is worth special attention, as is the bridge over the moat with its sculptural decoration and the chapel in the south tower, which has preserved its unified Renaissance furnishings. Inside, the Knights' Hall, the Turkish Hall with portraits of the Ottoman Sultan Murad IV, libraries, fireplaces, doors, and other furnishings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century have survived.

In front of the castle lies an English landscape park, and the grounds also include farm buildings, some of which still serve their original purpose. Today, Greillenstein is a museum and at the same time a valuable testimony to noble life, estate administration, and the changing character of a country residence from the Renaissance to the modern era.
