Fort Tourgis on Alderney

Fort Tourgis is among the most important military monuments on Alderney. This extensive fortress was completed in 1855 as part of a Victorian defensive system designed to protect the island and the planned harbor from possible French naval pressure in the English Channel. The project called for a garrison of 346 men and an armament of 33 heavy guns in five batteries, supplemented by mortars.

Even in the second half of the 19th century, however, it became clear that the rapid development of artillery and armored ships had rendered the original concept obsolete. Fort Tourgis nevertheless remained an important part of the island's defenses and was gradually adapted. Its form clearly shows the transition from the stone fortifications of the Victorian era to the more modern defensive elements of the 20th century.

Wartime use in the 20th century

After the German occupation of Alderney in 1940, the fortress acquired an entirely new significance. The Germans incorporated it into the Atlantic Wall and rebuilt it as the strongpoint Stutzpunkt Turkenburg. They added concrete bunkers, searchlight positions, anti-tank and coastal guns, and linked the individual sections with tunnels and covered access routes.

Today, part of the northern defenses is open to the public after clearance work. Fort Tourgis is valuable because it shows two distinct eras of fortification in one place: the Victorian period and the German wartime rebuild.
