A Monastic Castle with a Long Continuity

Festenburg stands on a rocky spur in the municipality of Sankt Lorenzen am Wechsel in Styria. The castle was founded around 1200, probably at the initiative of the Lords of Stubenberg, and is first documented in writing in 1353. Its position on a steep outcrop explains the defensive importance of the structure as well as the later alterations that turned it into a residence with a religious function.

During the Middle Ages, the Lords of Stadeck, Montfort, and Saurau held the site in turn. A turning point came in 1616, when Festenburg was purchased by Vorau Abbey. From then on, the monument was closely tied to the Augustinian Canons and gradually developed into a monastic complex.

The Church and Chapels

The knights hall was converted into the parish Church of Saint Catherine. Attached to it are six chapels, whose decoration was created from 1709 onward through the work of the painter Johann Cyriak Hackhofer. The ceiling fresco known as the Festenburg Women's Heaven is one of the notable works of Styrian High Baroque.

Today, Festenburg is not only a parish center but also a destination for visitors and part of the Styrian Castle Road. It recalls the history of a noble residence, church administration, and the transformation of a defensive castle into a spiritual and cultural site.
