A Natural Arch on the Jurassic Coast

Durdle Door is one of the best-known natural arches in England. It lies near Lulworth in the county of Dorset and is part of the protected Jurassic Coast, prized for its exceptionally readable geological profiles. The arch formed in a band of resistant Portland limestone, while the surrounding softer rocks were gradually carried away by the sea.

The shape of the site is defined by the complex structure of the coast. The rock layers here are almost vertical and are linked to the Lulworth folding, which formed during tectonic movements associated with Alpine folding. It was precisely the differing resistance of individual layers that created a narrow strip of land between the limestone and the chalk, and thus the conditions for the arch to form.

A Coast in Motion

The surrounding cliffs are still being actively shaped by erosion and landslides. In April 2013, a major collapse of part of the slope damaged the South West Coast Path. Durdle Door is therefore not only a tourist attraction, but also a place where the long-term development of the coast can be watched in real time.

The site is privately owned by the Weld family, yet it is open to the public. Together with the nearby Man O'War Cove, it belongs among the most visited parts of this stretch of Dorset. It is also a site that experts follow for its geological value and ongoing transformation. How much longer the arch will withstand the sea remains an open question.
