The Dutch Museum of Sea Rescue

Dorus Rijkers National Rescue Museum in Den Helder recalls the history of the rescue service on the North Sea coast of the Netherlands. It focuses above all on the work of the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Society, but it also presents other organizations that took part in helping people in distress on the water.

The museum is named after Dorus Rijkers, a legendary rescuer who became famous for hundreds of interventions at sea. The word "national" here is not a formal embellishment, but a reference to the scale of the theme, which spans the entire Dutch coast from the Zwin to the Eems and the former Zuiderzee.

Exhibitions and Collections

On display are films, models, paintings, period objects, and real rescue boats. Among the most valuable exhibits are the historic floating lifeboats Insulinde, Abraham Fock, Johan de Witt, Prins Hendrik, Javazee, Tjerck Hiddes, and the motorized lifeboat Cornelius Zwaan.

Visitors can also try modern forms of presentation, such as a VR experience or a navigation simulator. The museum thus combines technical history with the direct experience of the people who had to intervene in harsh conditions during accidents, storms, and shipwrecks.

The Museum's Development

The museum was founded in 1981. At first it was housed above a department store on Keizerstraat; later it moved to a building near the De Kampanje theater on Bernhardplein. Since 2003 it has operated in the grounds of the former state shipyard Willemsoord, in a former engine room adapted for museum use. In 2024, the entrance and visitor facilities were further renovated.

The museum's present form suits its subject well, because Den Helder was for a long time an important naval and port city. It is here that one can follow how sea rescue evolved from volunteer interventions to an organized service with modern equipment and clear rules.
