A Renaissance residence in the heart of Bučovice

Bučovice Castle is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Moravia. It was built between 1575 and 1585 for Jan Šembera of Boskovice, a member of one of the wealthiest Moravian noble families. The design itself reveals the ambition of its founder: this was not a defensive fortress, but a representative residence in the palazzo in fortezza style, a palace protected by fortifications.

The courtyard, arcades, and decoration

The greatest impression is made by the spacious courtyard, surrounded on three sides by arcades. In all, there are 96 slender columns here with capitals in various classical orders. The bases and portals bear heraldic motifs of the founder and his wives, a reminder that Renaissance architecture was also a tool of family representation. Unlike the more restrained exterior shell, the western wing conceals richly decorated halls with paintings, stucco work, and allegorical themes.

From noble seat to administrative center

After 1633, Giovanni Giacomo Tencalla took part in the Baroque alterations. For Maximilian of Liechtenstein, who acquired the estate through marriage, a monumental fountain was also created in the center of the courtyard. From 1681, the castle ceased to serve as a lordly residence and became the administrative center of the estate, later also the seat of the Liechtenstein accounting office. As a result, it was not extensively rebuilt and has preserved its exceptionally pure Renaissance character.

Today the castle is open to the public, and together with the restored garden it stands as a valuable testament to noble culture and the economic workings of a large estate in the early modern period.
