Brigittenauer Bridge

Brigittenauer Bridge is a modern Vienna bridge over the Danube, opened in 1982. It connects the districts of Brigittenau and Floridsdorf and ranks among the important transport structures in the northern part of the city. At first glance, it catches the eye with the red paint on its steel structure as well as the distinctive spiral ramps leading to pedestrian and cycle paths.

The bridge was built at a time when Vienna was dealing with growing traffic pressure on the crossings over the Danube. After the collapse of Reichsbrucke in 1976, it became clear how vulnerable urban traffic was to the loss of a single key link. Brigittenauer Bridge was therefore not just a technical structure, but also part of a broader effort to strengthen the city’s northern transport axis.

Design and use

The bridge consists of two main parts, a river bridge over the original Danube channel and a flood bridge over the adjoining floodplain. Overall, it is a six-lane route with separate traffic for pedestrians and cyclists. The steel load-bearing structure stands on concrete ramps that allow smooth connections to the surrounding roads. Although the bridge was originally intended as part of the motorway system, today it functions more as a robust urban link than as an overburdened motorway junction.

Its urban planning role is also noteworthy. Part of the structure was built before the Danube Island was created, that is, in the area of the former flood zone. Only the subsequent earthworks and the digging of the New Danube channel affected the final appearance of the surroundings and the overall cost of the project.

Today, Brigittenauer Bridge is an example of late modern infrastructure that reflects Vienna’s transformation in the second half of the twentieth century, from large transport plans to their adjustment in response to public opposition and new urban priorities.
