Mountain in the middle of Suðuroy
Borgarknappur is a prominent mountain on the island of Suðuroy in the Faroe Islands. It rises to 574 meters and is one of the landmarks of the island's central part. It lies west of the village of Hov, southeast of Famar, southwest of Oravik, and north of Vagur. Close by are the peak of Borgin, at 570 meters, and further south, Hvannafelli.
For the local landscape, it matters not only as a landmark but also as part of an old network of footpaths. Before roads were built between the villages on Suðuroy, people moved mainly along mountain trails. Some of them converged right around Borgarknappur, especially at the Mannaskarð pass and near Laðanfelli.
Stone cairns and old routes
Along the trails, stone cairns were erected to help with orientation in the rugged terrain and in poor visibility. Many of them still stand today and recall the practical way people moved through the landscape before modern transport. These routes connected the villages of Oravik, Famar, Porkeri, Hov, and Vagur and were of vital importance for everyday contact between the individual parts of the island.
Today, the trails are used mainly for hiking by locals and visitors alike. Borgarknappur thus represents a place where natural relief meets the island's historical transport logic. It is not a monument in the classic architectural sense, but rather a landscape point that preserves the memory of the old way of life in the Faroe Islands.
