The bridge that changed transport in Varna

Asparuh Bridge is a road bridge in Varna that links the Asparuhovo and Galata districts with the city center. It spans the navigable Varna-Devnya Canal, the only overland link across the waterway between Lake Beloslav, Lake Varna, and the Black Sea. From a transport perspective, it is a key junction on the route of the Black Sea Highway and European route E87.

The structure was put into operation in 1976 and from the outset played a major role in linking the northern and southern parts of the coast. Before it was built, traffic across the canal depended on a movable metal bridge that had to yield to ships. That slowed both road traffic and economic ties throughout the region.

Technical design

The bridge was designed as a combination of steel and reinforced-concrete construction. The central section consists of a steel continuous girder with three spans, with the main span reaching 160 meters. The approach sections are designed as reinforced-concrete girders. The structure was engineered to withstand heavy loads, strong winds, and pronounced temperature differences.

Asparuh Bridge is also one of Varna's most distinctive modern structures. Its position above the canal makes it not only a piece of transport infrastructure, but also a landmark in the cityscape and the harbor area.

Today and its significance

The bridge also has a troubled reputation because of repeated suicides recorded there. In recent years, there has been discussion about the need for another bridge to ease traffic between central Varna and the seaside resorts. Asparuh Bridge thus remains a structure that combines technical achievement with the everyday burden of a large city.
